Buying or renovating a home is an exciting moment made most affordable with foresight and planning, so why not talk to the experts? With the Edmonton Renovation Show coming January 27-29 to the Edmonton Expo Centre, we asked the incredible Robyn Webb (City Environmental Strategies) to drop some knowledge and tips on improving your home with ‘green’ ideas. All of these concepts are expanded on in Edmonton’s Green Living Guide: How To Green Your Everyday Life At Home, At Work And In The Community.

Read up and bring your questions to Edmonton Renovation Show where Robyn will be able to answer them for you.

1 – Programmable Thermostat Actual Settings. (Page 27 of EGLG)

In our guide we suggest that the day time temperature in your home should be between 21 and 19 degrees. At night you’ll be under covers and will save $$$ by requiring less heat. Don’t go below 17 degrees or you’re risking frost and possible health effects.

2 – Energy Star Label. (Page 26 of EGLG)

Look for the Energy Star Label when you’re buying home appliances, furnaces, hot water heaters etc. The symbol represents the highest level of energy efficiency among a huge variety of products. Not to mention the province will be rolling out incentive programs for energy efficient homes in March. Now is a great time to get on it.

3 – Location Efficiency. (page 34 of EGLG)

When you’re thinking about ‘how green’ a home is we tend to only think about the home itself but the ‘location efficiency’ is important too. We want you to think about all the things around the house e.g. Is there an LRT? public transit? doctor office nearby? How much will your living location effect the environment. Can you buy a house near your work? its not just convenient in fact some people end up not needing a 2nd car and save even more money that way.

4 – Consider getting an Energuide Audit. (page 24 of EGLG)

Check the guide for ratings details but basically its a number that rates the energy efficiency of homes. This may be mandatory soon but for now its just a great idea. This allows you to look at real cost numbers based on an actual home evaluation rather than eyeballing a home yourself and trying to make a cost estimate. An Energuide audit would tell you a lot about your home and upgrade opportunities.

5 – Solar Panels.

Edmonton’s Green Living Guide has the basics of how a solar system on a roof top works but City Of Edmonton and Solar Energy Society Of Alberta has three workshops coming up that allow for all questions and conversation.  Solar Energy is one of the most interesting and constantly evolving of the ‘green’ initiatives.
