I was lucky enough to see Nirvana twice back in 1991. The first time I saw them was at a club in Victoria B.C. in April of that year about five months before Nevermind was released. We were able to photograph the show, go backstage and interview the band, and were invited back to their hotel room to hang out and have a few beers.
SONiC 102.9 is Edmonton’s only modern rock station, with a library of songs that draws on the alternative music of the last three decades. The format was forged in the 1980s. Bands like The Clash, U2, REM, The Cure and The Ramones set the scene. The genre then took firm root in the 1990s with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Green Day. The millennium made the format even stronger, bringing us Weezer, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age and The White Stripes.
SONiC is a vibrant and fresh radio station that promises to discover and play new music first. SONiC is not just one genre of music. We like it loud, with bands like The Black Keys and Rise Against. We also like mellow and melodic tunes from Tegan and Sara and Death Cab for Cutie. And we certainly like to break boundaries and experiment with new sounds like Foster the People, Mumford & Sons and USS. SONiC also delivers the most rock with 45 minutes worth of commercial free modern rock every hour after 10am. And we go SUPERSONiC for the drive home, playing 102 minutes of non-stop modern rock every afternoon at 4pm.
