Thanks again for your feedback!

FYI - we will NOT be adding the song. While, technically, there are more people that are into hearing the song - the number of people that are passionately opposed to Skrillex are too great for us to ignore.

Cool?

Hi Matt - I think you make a few valid points, but something that I think you're missing is that Sonic has always been our radio station - as listeners. For years, I've sent in new artists or songs that I've found to the station - sometimes they make it to air, and sometimes they don't. I think this is what sets Sonic apart from the other stations, the fact that they're "Modern" not that they're "Rock".

The fact that as listeners we have a vote in this says a lot about the respect they have for their audience - and for the record, I voted no - but as you can see in the results, the No's are the minority. Looks like the vote was a pretty smart idea :)

Yo, I'm not saying if sonic doesn't play Skrillex, it's going to become the next KRock or Cool880 or something, but if you think rock n roll is just 4/4 time, Overdriven guitar, and 4 piece bands with some insignificantly novel element to it, you are a narrow minded indiscriminate listener and you've missed the point The term rock in and of itself is so general of a blanket genre of music, I wouldn't really hesitate to place Skrillex in it do a small degree. Here's an example, do Kings of Leon or the Arkells have the same exact formula for making music as The Stones or Zeppelin? No, they don't because smart people over time expanded their idea of what music CAN BE, said screw the opposition and went for it. And for annother thing, when do you ever hear Skrillex played in Edmonton? If we're relying on the Hot107 for musical integrity and advancement, we're something that rhymes with duck.

It's not distinctly core Sonic1029, but neither is Daft Punk, and you guys play that sometimes. Skrillex isn't just vanilla 3-chord club pop with disturbingly overpaid, under-talented rappers who hate music. This is more like progressive rythmic tribal beats of the 21st century. It's not strictly melodic, I think the new wave of electronic music is just extreem procussionists who program their deck similar to how drummers chose their brand of drum kit. It's too progressive to play on Edmonton's other homogeneous insipid stations, that's why it fits perfectly on Sonic. Just remember, all truth is first mocked, second violently opposed, and third aceepted without question.

Sonic plays Daft Punk, The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim and a few other electronic artists. Hell a lot of the new "rock" music can barely be called rock and still gets played. Gotye for example is not rock music, yet it is the number 1 song on Sonic. If Sonic can play The Prodigy without complaints, why cant it play Skrillex?

You are "Edmonton's Modern Rock" and this is not rock. People may or may not enjoy this type of music, and it might be nice to hear it from time to time, but you are not a top 40 station, or a hit music station. you are a modern ROCK station. if you begin playing songs completely outside the genre because it is popular, you will slowly over time become a hit music station. If you want to begin playing music such as this, one could make the argument why not dip into country. Taylor Swift probably has more followers on twitter, is easier on the eyes, and has more grammy's than Shrillex, but I bet playing some of her music hasn't crossed your mind.

Come on Sonic, you're the one redeeming radio station Edmonton has that doesn't play complete garbage. don't sell out.

Hey everyone!

I LOVE this discussion, and I'm super happy so many people are taking part in the voting!

To be clear, I'll be the first to admit that most of Skrillex's catalogue wouldn't have a home on our playlist. My question, in particular, has to do with the track I posted.

That being said, you're welcome to hate it, challenge us, and have your say! We are YOUR station. That's never changed.

This is so wrong.
You know how you advertise the station 24/7 as "Edmonton's MODERN ROCK, Sonic 102.9"? Well of course you do. People listen to this station BECAUSE it is modern rock. People tune in because they want to hear rock n roll, alternative rock, indie rock, etc. Notice how the key word here is rock? Skrillex is not modern rock. Dubstep is not modern rock. At all. Not even a little bit. It's a completely different genre. Yea it's a new thing, yea it's gaining popularity, and that's great and all, but that doesn't change the fact that it still has no relevance to modern rock.

If you like Skrillex, then that's great, all the power to you. However, just because you like it doesn't mean it should be thrown into the playlist of a station that specifically advertises itself as modern rock. If you are so determined to listen to Skrillex on your radio, then change the station. There are stations out there that already play it. Go there and have a dubstep dance party.

Judging by the responses on the facebook page regarding this poll, it seems that all the people who are voting yes are doing so with the logic "I like Skrillex, so therefore Sonic should play it". I love Foo Fighters, The Black Keys, Blink-182, Nirvana, Muse, etc etc etc. If I asked Hot 107 to play these bands just because I like them, they would probably tell me to take a hike and listen to a station that already plays that kind of music. The bands I like do not fit into that station, and that's fine, because they play genres of music that fit their own demographic. Why would I try to change a radio station that is clearly geared towards a different audience? Well, same story here. Sonic has a pretty clear cut demographic. Stick to it.

Hell, as painful as it is to say, a band such as Nickelback is far more relevant in the discussion of modern rock than Skrillex, seeing as Nickelback at least falls into the category of rock. However, if Sonic started playing Nickelback people would probably egg the station and start a riot. Even Linkin Park's latest album basically got shunned by Sonic because they changed gears in their musical direction, and they are still far more relevant to modern rock than Skrillex or any dubstep artist.

If Sonic is so concerned about if people like Skrillex to determine whether it should get played or not, why are you even bothering to advertise yourself as modern rock? You might as well advertise yourself as Edmonton's "we'll play whatever artist is popular" station.

While I do not care for Skrillex, I do think that more electronic alternative acts should be showcased on Sonic. I know many people will argue that they aren't rock, but the thing about modern alternative music is that it's really broadened and expanded beyond just rock. It's more of a movement in all genre's off pushing the boundry, and I would hardly mind hearing Alternative kinds of Dubstep, Drum and Bass, House, and even rave music during the late night, as long as it has some sort of reason to still be part of the alternative genre. This means people like Madeon and Lemaitre are perfectly acceptable in my mind, but don't be throwing in David Guetta and company, because that simply isn't music.

Anyone agree?

If I asked Hot 107 to play these bands just because I like them, they would probably tell me to fuck off and listen to a station that already plays that kind of music.

"Skrillex. He's everywhere these days." Uhhh so is Nickelback, Justin Bieber, Chris Brown, and many more. No reason to start playing it. Sonic is soooo rad at sticking to "modern rock" and it would be a shame to see it go a different direction just because that's what's popular. Plenty of other Edmonton stations play dubstep, and fans of Skrillex should definitely feel free to listen to them! However, Skrillex is a farrrrrr cry from modern rock and there is NO way it wouldn't seem totally out of place during a solid Sonic line up.

It's like nails on a chalk board to me, I wouldn't call this modern rock, it's club scene stuff, not the kind of thing I listen to Sonic for, I would have to turn the radio off or to another station if I heard this come on.

Honestly there are SO MANY great producers out there that top the sounds of Skrillex. Sure he may seem as some "figure head" here in North America, but he's not even that talented - he just has great promotion. This city alone has incredibly talented producers - and not to mention the likes of every artist coming out of the UK - Do some research before jumping on the "Skrillex" bandwagon - There's much more to the genre blends than just Skrillex.. and although Sonic plays some pretty gnarly modern rock and this would be a great step forward - I think you are limiting yourself - and going to create flack for only featuring one artist - Especially from your local producers here in Edmonton (I being one of them),
Majority of artists - even ones you play on Sonic are jumping ship to more of an electronic feel - the world as a whole is accepting the electronic music revolution - but if you want to stay on top and get the best amount of feedback/listeners/promotion - try starting up a late night dubstep show featuring the top tracks for the week around the globe - BBC radio 1 does it and it's a HUGE success - because they don't just feature ONE MAINSTREAM artist - and by being a "late night" show you won't be alienating the regular listeners tuning in at work - I think you would have more success from that... but that's just one local DJ/Producers opinion.
PS - I do a weekly podcast mix of the newest in dubstep/moombah/dirty electro every week on my soundcloud :P

I’ve got something that is not awesome,

You know when you go to Tim Horton’s and order a coffee, the lady pours it, plops the lid on and off you go. Then you flip open the top and go to take that first sip, if the lid has been placed on the cup in such a fashion that the seam of the cup is in the opening, because of the lids low profile, when you’re tired and just want your morning jolt it’s like the sensation of a dismembered finger with a big nasty fingernail brushing against your lip and tongue.

I’m sure that by virtue of working at Tim Horton’s you’d have to have experienced this sensation and I have to wonder if they do it to people as a nasty joke or something. It would be nice if there was a common term to describe this.

I think it would be a sweet power move to be able to walk into a Timmie’s and when the gruff, no nonsense lady barks you to the cash register you could say, “I’ll have a large, two milks one sugar.. oh yeah, and don’t XYZ me…”

I get so totally annoyed with those people right off the bat saying, "I know what it is!" No you don't! you just think you do, like everyone else. I, however, am a studious girl, and Garner has given two very, very helpful hints... If people would just pay attention, they could at least have an educated guess, but don't say you "know" it!!!! But Garner, I Do know it, probably anyway. ;D ha ha

Thanks Bryce... I had to run into a dinner meeting when you guys first played this on the air and sadly missed it's debut on Sonic but I am very glad I heard it here now. Tip of the hat to Jack as he has seemed to slide back to the acoustic, bluesy, sound that I enjoy (not that that's all I enjoy from him as I have everything I can find he does including the bluegrass solo stuff, if you dont know of it, check it out!) and congrats to this post as now I will be needing to watch "It Might Get Loud" for the 34th time.

My comment is that the way they set up ticket purchsing this year SUCKED. I logged in and watched the clock count down and the second it was available, I hit purchase. I was on standby page for 38 minutes-as were three of my friends-when it said it was sold out. I am still on the standby page for the second weekend as I am typing this. I have already booked my campsite and a trailer-which are both nonrefundable-and no tickets :( I REALLY REALLY hope Sonic is giving away tickets orI might cry a bit.
WHY COACHELLA??? WHY???????

I'm very excited about this album.....more than I have been over the last two albums put out by OLP. I like that Raine and the rest of the band are, what seems to be, down to earth people who have a good grasp on the everyday person. I hope they come to Vancouver or Kamloops, B.C. so I could see 'em again live....it would be my 5th. Huge fan...can't wait to hear it. Good interview!

This countdown is so awesome!! But they should have named this "The top 92 songs that we played once and 10 songs that we played every hour on the hour" :)

I just wish Sonic would play more of these new songs all the time!!! That would make 2012 the best year ever!!!!

In the small town where I used to live, there was a group of people that we, the workers of the store, named "the cheese capers". The first time they tried stealing from the store, they had:
~$1100 worth of pizza mozzarella, no other type of cheese
~$1000 worth of assorted pain medication
~$400 of products from every other department inside the store.
Grand total, on the first try, was 2500 bucks. Then they tried it again, same total. And again. That wasn't the end of it. In the one month, they tried stealing $1100 worth of cheese 5 times. The last time, there was enough evidence to try and bust them; I haven't heard how it's gone.

I've gone to court to prosecute against youths (10 to 14 year olds) for shop lifting. It pulls at heart strings, families are in the store after school, so they have backpacks on, nothing new there, but when they go through the till, they are noticeably enlarged, so they have to be stopped. They get a look of fear, fake or not I don't know, then the parents start interfering, saying their kid would never steal anything. Open the bag, and they're make-up, cleaners, and every other non-necessity thing shoved into this 6 year old's bag. It's disgusting.

$1100, eh.
While working in my small town, there was a group of people that we accurately dubbed "The Cheese Capers". On several occasions, they would try and seal a cart full of pizza mozzarella. The first time, the total was:
~$1200 in pizza mozzarella
~$1000 in Lacota pain medication
~$300 in other assorted goodies, including a deli sandwich.
For a grand total of $2500, and they didn't try this once, no. At least 4 times in a month; it was insane.

I've been to court cases to prosecute a youth (10 to 14 year olds) for stealing. When you stop someone of that age, it pulls at the heart strings. But you can't let them walk out with merch, especially when the parent/guardian/sibling is pulling on them, and the child has that look in the eye that makes you think they're trained.

Best concert I've seen in a long time! It was about time that they came and played a show again in Edmonton. Great music, great audience, amazing night.

Shout out to Mario, Warrio, and John. Plus that cute girl that kept giving me cigarettes.

DFA1979 - enjoy my bra, and come back again :).

The game was originally created for the Apple iOS system, but has since been enhanced for compatibility with a good deal of other touchscreen smartphones. Personal computer and gaming console-friendly versions of Angry Birds are now available, too. Angry Birds is being hyped as the most addictive video game on the market - mainly due to its clever, amusing style and entertaining animation, along with the fact that it only costs about a dollar to download, maybe $3 for the HD version.

I am against. Definitely against. I do read comics and frequent stores that have big cutouts of superheroes and robots in the windows. So, I have seen a lot of sweat pants in public.

This comic pretty much sums up the whole debate http://ourvaluedcustomers.blogspot.com/2010/11/oh-yes-this-really-happened.html.

Hmmm. So basically this comes down to who has the most fans, not the song that seems to represent the Oilers better. Why the Edmonton Journal just doesn't decide, I don't know.

Funny how someone with the grammar of an inbreed can have the audacity to slander an amazing
Canadian talent such as Dallas Green. I personally don't follow City and Color nor Alexisonfire a whole lot but I couldn't let this uneducated comment stand.

@ landon gibson

OR we could stop whining and complaining about them breaking up. Dallas Green made a decision because he didn't want to be on the road 24/7 and he wanted to put his attention into something he was passionate about. Be thankful you had over a decade of alexisonfire to begin with.
