In response to the above acceptance speech at the Grammys….
“Oh, what a night we had last Sunday at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards. The glitz! The Glamour! SEACREST! Where do I begin?? Chillin’ with Lil’ Wayne…meeting Cyndi Lauper’s adorable mother…the complimentary blinking Coldplay bracelet…..much too much to recap. It’s really is still a bit of a blur. But, if there’s one thing that I remember VERY clearly, it was accepting the Grammy for Best Rock Performance…and then saying this:

“To me this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of music is what’s important. Singing into a microphone and learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, that’s the most important thing for people to do… It’s not about being perfect, it’s not about sounding absolutely correct, it’s not about what goes on in a computer. It’s about what goes on in here [your heart] and what goes on in here [your head].”

Not the Gettysburg Address, but hey……I’m a drummer, remember?

Well, me and my big mouth. Never has a 33 second acceptance rant evoked such caps-lock postboard rage as my lil’ ode to analog recording has. OK….maybe Kanye has me on this one, but….Imma let you finish….just wanted to clarify something…

I love music. I love ALL kinds of music. From Kyuss to Kraftwerk, Pinetop Perkins to Prodigy, Dead Kennedys to Deadmau5…..I love music. Electronic or acoustic, it doesn’t matter to me. The simple act of creating music is a beautiful gift that ALL human beings are blessed with. And the diversity of one musician’s personality to the next is what makes music so exciting and…..human.

That’s exactly what I was referring to. The “human element”. That thing that happens when a song speeds up slightly, or a vocal goes a little sharp. That thing that makes people sound like PEOPLE. Somewhere along the line those things became “bad” things, and with the great advances in digital recording technology over the years they became easily “fixed”. The end result? I my humble opinion…..a lot of music that sounds perfect, but lacks personality. The one thing that makes music so exciting in the first place.

And, unfortunately, some of these great advances have taken the focus off of the actual craft of performance. Look, I am not Yngwie Malmsteen. I am not John Bonham. Hell…I’m not even Josh Groban, for that matter. But I try really fucking hard so that I don’t have to rely on anything but my hands and my heart to play a song. I do the best that I possibly can within my limitations, and accept that it sounds like me. Because that’s what I think is most important. It should be real, right? Everybody wants something real.

I don’t know how to do what Skrillex does (though I fucking love it) but I do know that the reason he is so loved is because he sounds like Skrillex, and that’s badass. We have a different process and a different set of tools, but the “craft” is equally as important, I’m sure. I mean…..if it were that easy, anyone could do it, right? (See what I did there?)

So, don’t give me two Crown Royals and then ask me to make a speech at your wedding, because I might just bust into the advantages of recording to 2 inch tape.

Now, I think I have to go scream at some kids to get off my lawn.

Scenic Route To Alaska’s Bio

Scenic Route to Alaska is proving that less is more. The band’s distinct, heartfelt, and catchy indie-folk-rock is as tight as their unshakeable friendship. Having grown up together, Shea Connor (drummer), and Murray Wood (bassist), intuitively know what Trevor Mann (guitarist and vocals) is writing about. After forming in the summer of 2010, Trevor and Shea travelled to Montreal to meet Murray in order to record a 3 song demo at the McGill University. After countless bar shows, showcases, and a steadily growing fan-base, Scenic Route to Alaska left there comfort zone and successfully toured through Alberta and the interior of British Columbia. Shortly after playing Edmonton’s own S.O.S. Festival, the band was invited to perform at the Edmonton and Canmore Folk Music Festivals. They deemed it necessary to have more material recorded and decided to add 3 songs to their original EP. After two days in Norwood Studios, the band had a completed 6 song disc, engineered and produced by James Murdoch (James Murdoch Band) and Chris Wynters (Captain Tractor). After demonstrating very successful CD sales at both Folk Festivals, Scenic Route to Alaska is looking to release a new full length album before the summer of 2012.

Trevor Mann is the songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist for Scenic Route to Alaska. After growing up in an environment riddled with musical influences, it comes as no surprise that Trevor is pursuing a steadily blossoming career as a musician and songwriter. Writing catchy songs, being personable, and showing a deep passion for the music he is producing, Trevor Mann, at twenty years of age, is quickly making a name for himself in the music industry.

Murray Wood, age twenty, has been playing the Upright and Electric Bass for the better part of ten years. Following two years of study in the Jazz Program at Grant Macewan University, Murray was accepted into the Upright Bass Program at McGill University in Montreal: a program which has garnered international acclaim for it’s competitive musical reputation. September of 2011 will mark Murray’s second year in the Jazz Performance Program where he maintains a near perfect GPA. Furthermore, Murray’s enrollment in the program has facilitated advantageous networking opportunities for Scenic Route to Alaska.

Shea Connor, although not from a musical family, first felt inspired to pursue drum lessons, from drumming instructor Mike Sniatenchuk, at the age of twelve. Over the past ten years, Shea has had the opportunity to exhibit his growing talent in various musical realms until eventually Scenic Route to Alaska proved to be an ideal musical fit to accommodate Shea’s passionate pursuit of the art of drumming. Shea has been in high demand as both a backing and studio drummer for many local musicians, experiences that have contributed to his growth in music of varying styles.

Remember Eve 6…from back in the day? I really dug them, and was upset when they called it quits back in 2004. However, they are BACK! They will be releasing a new album called “Speak In Code” on April 24th.

Well, FINALLY, Shirley, Butch & Co. are ready to give us some real, concrete facts!

First of all, they’re finished the new album!  “Not Your Kind of People” will hit stores on May 15th.  It will be released on  their own label, STUNVOLUME, and they’ll promote it with a bunch of tour dates in the UK (still no word on North American shows).

They’re still tight lipped on when we’ll hear the first full track from the album, but they did put together a video letting us know what we can expect.

Extra, Extra, read all about it. I’ve officially watched all nine films nominated for Best Picture at the 84th Academy Awards, and in one night, I witnessed the best and one of the worst films of 2011.

What worked – everything. It’s one of the best films of the decade, and it’s already in my top ten of all time. The Artist is not only a beautiful tribute to film and the magic to movie making, it speaks so much with silence unlike the extremely loud and incredibly annoying:

What worked – nothing except for two scenes. 1) When Linda Schell (Sandra Bullock) talks with Thomas Schell (Tom Hanks) on the phone with the Twin Towers as the backdrop. 2) When Linda Schell (Sandra Bullock) – do you see a trend? – explains to Oskar (Thomas Horn) how she discovered what he’s been up to. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is touted as the worst reviewed movie to be nominated for an Academy Award with good reason. The New York Post said it best, “Extremely, incredibly exploitive” and a “quest for emotional blackmail, cheap thrills and a naked ploy for an Oscar.”

If you’re going to watch Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, make sure to:
- count how many times Oskar asks a question
- count the amount of times Thomas is allowed to use the phone in a burning World Trade Center
- ask yourself ‘how odd is it to see a picture of Tom Hanks with the missing of September 11th, 2001?’
- ask yourself ‘how did Max von Sydow get nominated again?’

The Rickster (wondering how Berenice Bejo couldn’t be more beautiful and her husband, director Michel Hazanavicius, does an incredible job bringing out her true colours).
