Its been 14 years since the first Pirates movie hit theatres and six since the last installment, On Stranger Tides. But that all changes tonight as Jack Sparrow returns.

 

In the new film, Dead Men Tell No Tales, Jack Sparrow must face his old nemesis Armando Salazar portrayed by Javier Bardem. Salazar and his Spanish Navy ghost crew have escaped the Devil’s Triangle and are determined to kill every living pirate. Sparrow is joined by Elizabeth Swan and Will Turner’s son Henry on his quest. Henry is eager to break the curse of the Flying Dutchmen, whom his father now captains.

 

 

Here are some swash-buckling facts about the mega-franchise:

  1. Originally based on a pre-existing ride at Disneyland built in 1967.
  2. As of January 2015, the franchise was listed as #11 in the list of all-time highest grossing franchises with $3.7 billion.
  3. Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom will reprise their roles as Elizabeth Swan and Will Turner for the first time since 2011 after being absent from On Stranger Tides.
  4. Jack Sparrow has a now-iconic sparrow tattooed on his forearm. Shortly after filming the first Pirates movie, Depp had it tattooed on himself with the addition of his son’s name.
