A week after it became a rumour, Amazon has made their Lord of the Rings show official.

While there’s no confirmed release date, the company has announced a multi-season deal that will “explore new storylines” set before Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. The deal also touched on the potential of multiple spin-off series.

The series will be produced by Amazon Studios along with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema. Peter Jackson’s LOTR films were also produced by New Line Cinema, so it may be safe to assume that they’ll exist in a similar universe.
