Hey, it’s Chantal. Sometimes it’s hard to keep track or be in the know about all the cool things going on in the city or online! Social media can get flooded, life can get chaotic, you know how it is. That’s what this is here for! Alternative Weekends is a nifty little series with the top 3 things happening in Edmonton or on SONiC, over the weekend. Who’s releasing a new album? Is there a SONiC artist live streaming? What can you do in Edmonton this weekend? Those questions will be answered here.

Here are 3 things to check out this weekend:

1.Listen to new albums from The Flaming Lips and Jeremy Gara (Arcade Fire):

Former SONiC BOOM band The Flaming Lips are releasing their sixteenth studio album this Friday, September 11th. It’s called American Head. The drummer of Arcade Fire, Jeremy Gara, is also releasing an album September 11th. The album is called Passerine Finale and is a follow-up to his solo debut. He released one song early called “wraith” which you can listen to above. Fellow Arcade Fire member Will Butler has confirmed he will also be releasing a solo album in September. A new Arcade Fire album is in the works as well, but no release date yet and it probably won’t be as obscure as it’s members’ solo projects.

2. Watch “A Virtual Princess Bride Reunion”

This Sunday, September 13th, the cast of The Princess Bride is getting back together.Cary Elwes, Wallace Shawn, Carol Kane, Robin Wright,  Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon, Rob Reiner, and other “special guests” will be there! The virtual event will include a live table read of The Princess Bride along with a Q&A moderated by actor and stand-up comedian, Patton Oswalt. Everything will begin at 5 pm Edmonton time. You can get tickets by donation here.

2. Go on an abandoned shopping cart hunt

This weekend is the very first weekend of the year that SONiC is accepting photos for the “Abandoned Shopping Carts of YEG 2021 Calendar”. So take a photo of any abandoned shopping cart you find around Edmonton and send it to the email address submit@sonic1029.com. The photo you send could be one month’s feature in the “Abandoned Shopping Carts of YEG 2021 Calendar”!
