In the 90’s, Mariah Carey recorded an alt-rock album under the name Chick.

She recorded the album while making her 1995 album Daydream. She discussed the mystery album with Stephen Colbert on September 28.

Written and recorded in 1995, Someone’s Ugly Daughter by Chick (a.k.a. Mariah Carey) was never released because her label wouldn’t allow her.

“It was for laughs, I did it for laughs,” she told Colbert. “Because it was such a popular genre at the time, I was like, well, I have a full band here. Let’s do something and I’ll make up some nonsense and sing it.”

Carey ended up liking what she made and brought it to the label. Her plan was to dress up and be unrecognizable, record a music video and put it out into the world with no one knowing it was her.

“I’m kinda happy that at this moment the fans are hearing it. ‘Cause it’s me, doing an accent, doing an imitation of someone that I created that doesn’t actually exist.”

Mariah Carey’s new memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey is out now.
