Alternative Weekends with Chantal

Hey, it’s Chantal. Sometimes it’s hard to keep track or be in the know about all the cool things going on in the city or online! Social media can get flooded, life can get chaotic, you know how it is. That’s what this is here for! Alternative Weekends is a nifty little series with the top 3 things happening in Edmonton or on SONiC, over the weekend. Who’s releasing a new album? Is there a SONiC artist live streaming? What can you do in Edmonton this weekend? Those questions will be answered here.

Here are 3 things to check out this weekend:

1. Listen to new albums from Kings of Leon and Monowhales

Tomorrow, March 5th, Kings of Leon will be releasing their eighth studio album When You See Yourself. This will be the band’s first release in five years!

Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Followill joined SONiC music director Taylor for a conversation about the band’s new album. You can listen to the interview, and their latest single “The Bandit” by clicking here.

Kings of Leon isn’t the only band releasing an album that day either. Monowhales are releasing their new album Daytona Bleach. They announced the album with the release of their new single “Out With The Old” in January, saying:

“Our new single “Out With The Old” drops today and we can FINALLY tell you that our new album ‘Daytona Bleach’ is coming out on March 5th! We’ve waited SO LONG to share this with you and we honestly can’t believe the day is finally here! Every single thing we’ve learned, felt, won, and lost over the past two years is embedded in the grooves of this record and we are so excited that it won’t be long before you can hold it in your hands and cram it into your earholes.”

You can pre-save Daytona Bleach here.

2. Experience SkirtsAfire Reimagined

This year you can experience SkirtsAfire in-person or online! The festival kicks off today, March 4th and runs until March 14th, in conjunction with International Women’s Day.

The event involves theatre, dance, cabaret, music, comedy, short films, and visual art. The in-person shows are held at the Westbury Theatre and Chianti Cafe in the heart of Old Strathcona.

“We present powerful and insightful stories to a diverse audience that is hungry to be moved by passionate performances and exhibitions. Programming reflects the true diversity of the thriving arts community in Alberta and Canada, and is adaptive in its approach in order to remain responsive to the needs of artists and audiences.”

3. Watch the battle of Alberta

The Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames are facing off this Saturday, in a battle of Alberta. This will be the fourth time the two teams have played against each other this season, however with the new schedule they’ll battle it out a total of 10 times.

The game will be in Calgary at 8 p.m. on Saturday, and you can watch it on Sportsnet.
