Alternative Weekends with Chantal

Hey, it’s Chantal. Sometimes it’s hard to keep track or be in the know about all the cool things going on in the city or online! Social media can get flooded, life can get chaotic, you know how it is. That’s what this is here for! Alternative Weekends is a nifty little series with the top 3 things happening in Edmonton or on SONiC, over the weekend. Who’s releasing a new album? Is there a SONiC artist live streaming? What can you do in Edmonton this weekend? Those questions will be answered here.

Here are 3 things to check out this weekend:

1. Have some laughs with the Bonfire Festival

This Friday, April 9th, Rapid Fire Theater is kicking off their Bonfire Festival. Rapid Fire Theater is recognized as one of the world’s leading improv companies, and they’re based right here in Edmonton. This year, the Bonfire Festival will be online, running until April 24th.

“Bonfire is Rapid Fire Theatre’s annual romp of new ideas in improv. Starring the members of the Rapid Fire Theatre ensemble, each show at Bonfire has been created by one of RFT’s own. Every show at Bonfire is a new idea that we’ve never tried before; it might work, it might not, but either way it’ll be a joy to witness. The best part? All shows are pay-what-you-can!”

2. See the Arts District Animation as part of Downtown Spark

Over the last month or so, Downtown Spark has launched multiple installations and exhibits across the city. However this weekend is the start of something new, called Arts District Animation. From April 8th until May 31st, outside of The Winspear Centre, The Art Gallery of Alberta, and Citadel Theatre, you can witness some unique digital experiences! Check out The Winspear Window Watching Experience starting April 8th, The Art Gallery of Alberta’s Sidewalk Cinema starting April 23rd, and The Citadel Theatre’s Window to New Works starting April 10th.

“These displays will feature the incredible work of local artists, showcased on large outdoor LED screens or with laser projections and accompanying sound.”

3. Dine under the stars in the Geoscapes

This is the last weekend to experience a meal inside of a heated geodome in our city’s River Valley! You’ll get to enjoy a 2-4 course menu at the Victoria Golf Course, with vegetarian or gluten free options available. April 8th to 11th is Indigenous Week, and the chef is Shane Chartrand.

On Saturday and Sunday, you can also go to brunch in the dome at either 11:00am or 1:00pm.
