Alternative Weekends with Chantal

by chantal.dunn on July 1, 2021, 07:07am. MDT

Hey, it’s Chantal. Sometimes it’s hard to keep track or be in the know about all the cool things going on in the city or online! Social media can get flooded, life can get chaotic, you know how it is. That’s what this is here for! Alternative Weekends is a nifty little series with the top 3 things happening in Edmonton or on SONiC, over the weekend. Who’s releasing a new album? Is there a SONiC artist live streaming? What can you do in Edmonton this weekend? Those questions will be answered here.

This Alternative Long Weekend is presented to you by our friends at AGD beer, because all good days start with AGD beer and long weekends.*

Here are 3 things to check out:

1.Go on a River Valley Scavenger Hunt

From July 1st to 14th Edmonton’s River Valley Alliance is hosting a scavenger hunt, virtually. This self-guided activity takes you through paths in Edmonton, Strathcona County, Sturgeon County, Fort Saskatchewan, Devon, and Parkland County.

“Find new to you trails to explore and fill your summer with some outdoor adventure.”

2.Enjoy the reopening weekend of Fort Edmonton Park

After being closed for three years due to renovations and then the pandemic, Fort Edmonton Park has finally reopened! You can also check out a brand new exhibit called the Indigenous Peoples Experience which was created with the help of MOU Partners, the Métis Nation of Alberta, and the Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations.

“The stories, music, artwork, and text in the experience come from local Indigenous perspectives and voices, gathered through engagement with local Indigenous communities, historical documents, and research.”

The park has also expanded the 1920s-style midway and added a new front entry plaza. To celebrate their reopening they’ll have live music, adult beverages, and a gourmet food truck fare by the Ferris wheel.

3.Edmonton is displaying fireworks and lighting the city orange

Edmonton is moving forward with the fireworks this year, on July 1st at 11 p.m. The fireworks will be over the river valley like previous years, however, this year the display will be higher up to allow better viewing from a distance. They’ll also be lit up to music from the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

The display will also be available online for those who’d rather watch from home. To find out more, click here.

From July 1st to 4th, the high-level bridges, The Walterdale Bridge, City Hall, and the Muttart Conservatory will be all lit up in orange.

“The City of Edmonton remains committed to the journey of reconciliation and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action,” the city said in a press release.
