Over the past year, Coldplay has been working to make their Music of the Spheres tour more sustainable. In a new report, Billboard stated that the band has cut down their carbon footprint by nearly 50% since their last tour and has planted 5 million trees to offset emissions.

The band pledged to plant one tree for every ticket sold and to reduce their carbon emissions by 50% compared to their 2016-2017 Head Full of Dreams tour. In a statement, the band said their current tour has created 47% fewer emissions from band and crew travel, show production, and freight. The data was independently assessed by MIT Environment Solutions Initiative professor John E. Fernandez.

The band revealed how they’re hoping to continue to improve on their sustainability practices, saying “Now that we’re into the second year of the tour, we’ve started to run the entire show (audio, lights, lasers, etc) from an electric battery system that allows us to use 100% renewable energy as efficiently as possible. We have been using electric vehicles and alternative fuels wherever we can, as well as reducing waste and plastic usage to a minimum.”

In addition to their own practices, the band is encouraging fans to join them in creating a more sustainable tour by providing exercise bikes and kinetic dance floors to help power the show and suggesting that concertgoers use alternative transportation and bring their own refillable water bottles to the show.
