Strathcona County Pride

Pride Is Coming!

Strathcona County Pride is moving online this year in recognition of the ongoing pandemic, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be any less fun! We have a whole week planned with events and activities.

Monday, June 1st: At 11am, we’ll be streaming a Pride Flag Raising with Mayor Rod Frank and members of Council. We’re taking precautions and not making this a public event, and we’ll instead be streaming the event on Facebook for everyone to enjoy!

Also on Monday, we’ll be opening up registration to be notified when our Pride Survey is launching. We had intended to launch a survey to give an opportunity for Strathcona County residents to have their voices heard on 2SLGBTQ+ issues, but with the ongoing coronavirus crisis, we have decided to delay the launch until later in the summer. Registrants will have the survey sent directly to them when it launches. Easy!

Wednesday, June 3rd: Strathcona County Library will be offering their 2020 Pride Reads on their eBook list for anyone who’s interested in a bit of thematic reading while they socially distance.

And at 6:30pm, The altView Foundation and Family & Community Services Strathcona County will be hosting their regular Family Support Group and Community GSA via Zoom. These groups offer safe spaces for families and 2SLGBTQ+ youth to connect, share, learn, and have a good time. For more details or to request the Zoom link, please email!

Thursday, June 4th: Strathcona County Library will have their film recommendation for Pride, The Half of It.

Friday, June 5th: The Library will have a Book Talk on PET by Akwaeke Emezi, a story about identity and justice told through the genre-bending adventure of a transgender youth of colour.

Saturday, June 6th: Join the Library for Rainbow Recipes where they’ll be making Pride-themed popsicles!

Sunday, June 7th: As always, our friends at Sherwood Park United Church will have their weekly affirming service. They have supported 2SLGBTQ+ people in Strathcona County for many years and their services are wonderful.

As well, the Library will close out our week with a book discussion of the graphic novel @Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu, a tale of magic, family, and self-discovery! Participation in the book discussion will enter you to win a prize!

Throughout the week, we’ll be hosting other fun activities such as daily educational videos from The altView Foundation that will cover Pride basics such as the acronym, what life is like for 2SLGBTQ+ people, coming out, and more! We’ll also be celebrating our furry, feathered, and scaled allies with Pride Up Your Pet, a social media activity where the picture with the most activity will win a gift card from Pookey’s Pet Food and Supplies!

Through the month of June, we’ll also be sharing events from other communities that are launching their own virtual Pride Festivals so County residents can participate in Pride all month long!

For exact times for many of the livestreamed events, please like and follow the host pages. The Library will be hosting their activities on their Instagram!!

Happy Pride, Strathcona County!
